My Story with TiDB - A Belated Monologue

Preface: This is a belated monologue, so long overdue that I have forgotten when I received the invitation, just as I don’t remember how I started with TiDB.

Main Text: As a steadfast SQL SERVER user, for at least seven or eight years after starting work, I silently accompanied SQL SERVER, whether it was a small ordering system for a sales meeting or a large ERP system covering multiple business formats for thousands of stores. I thought it would always be this way, just like the bright tomorrow after dawn.
Until one late night in July 2019, a night of unbearable loneliness. For the first time, it was truly the first time, I switched from SQL SERVER to TiDB. Before that, my understanding of TiDB was limited to it being just a database, nothing more. At that time, the company leadership chose TiDB among many databases because the framework was microservices, so TiDB had 8 databases, whereas the previous SQL SERVER had only one, a typical monolithic service database. Since TiDB is compatible with MySQL but not with SQL SERVER, the official switching tool couldn’t be used, so we had to find our own way. In the end, we chose Kettle as the tool for switching data between heterogeneous databases (PS: Speaking of Kettle, I seem to owe a TUG colleague an article on Kettle, laugh-cry). Everything started from scratch, so the days preparing for the switch were painful and hard to endure, especially needing to translate a large number of stored procedures and custom functions into the program. The past is unbearable to look back on, the old feelings should not be lingered on… Returning to that wonderful night, when everyone completed the switch step by step, the system started running as expected, yes, it started running normally. At that moment, everything was worth it, at that moment, I developed an inexplicable fondness for TiDB. It was a kind of solitary joy, like the delight of reading poetry, a feeling that quietly infiltrates like the night rain.
Time came to April 6, 2020, and I proudly became a member of TUG.

Epilogue: My story with TiDB is far from over; it has just begun~

This is a story that seems short but is actually quite long.

Origin:
My connection with TiDB began when I joined this company. At that time, I wasn’t very familiar with TiDB; I only knew that goInception’s parsing rules were written based on TiDB. The company already had an AP business using TiDB, but it was managed by my operations leader at the time. As a relatively young DBA, it was naturally my duty to take over this database that I didn’t yet understand. Here, I must thank my previous leader, who played a significant role in guiding me to learn TiDB quickly.

Elevation:
My deeper connection with TiDB started with a moderator recruitment event in the community, initiated by my cousin. With the fearless attitude of a newcomer, I resolutely participated in the recruitment and joined the moderator group. Initially, I thought my modest technical skills would suffice, but I soon realized that wasn’t the case. I found that there were three types of people in this group:

  1. Experts
  2. Experts who claim they are not experts
  3. Myself
    image
I learned a lot from the conversations with these experts and attended various online and offline TiDB meetings. I also met my cousin and the experts in person, gaining a lot of knowledge.

Love is like you shining alone in the brilliant galaxy. I hope I can also leave a subtle mark in the vast codebase of TiDB. As long as life continues, my story with TiDB has no end.

Since joining the company, I have officially started working with TiDB. Before this, I didn’t know much about TiDB. It was only after joining the company that I spent most of my time learning about TiDB. Previously, I was just studying and doing daily work without much interaction. It wasn’t until I encountered TiDB that I felt the joy of learning through the community.

At first, I only checked the community to see if there were similar cases to the problems I encountered, which was very convenient. As I learned more, I began to enjoy the community atmosphere. (Posting questions and getting patient answers, understanding how experts handle issues, helping others solve problems, expanding my own thinking, and feeling a sense of happiness.)

This feeling is wonderful. After experiencing it a couple of times, I realized that technology is not a boring thing. It gives me a strong sense of participation and achievement. Now, I not only search for problems in the community but also get to know experts through communication, expand my thinking, and share what I have learned, which brings me great joy.

Of course, there is still a significant gap in both knowledge accumulation and writing skills. I hope to improve myself here and grow through communication. (After all, I’m still young, almost a post-2000s generation: see_no_evil:)

I hope to learn more related knowledge and improve my writing skills in the future.

Alright, I couldn’t figure out the format, please forgive me: see_no_evil:
