The TiDB Hackathon 2022 finals concluded perfectly on the eve of the 1024 Programmer’s Day. The 48-hour Happy Hacking event featured interesting and substantial projects, with continuous excitement!

This year’s theme was “Possibility at Scale,” with a record-breaking scale of 303 participants and 86 teams. Participants included professionals from companies like Microsoft, Ant Group, ByteDance, NetEase Youdao, Inspur, Ming Chao Wanda, Bilibili, Cisco, Taiji Graphics, and students from universities such as Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, East China Normal University, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, and the National University of Singapore. The contestants competed in two main tracks: the TiDB Product Group and the Application Group, showcasing their technical skills and creative ideas.

Hackathon, also known as “Hacker Marathon,” is a highly popular event among programmers. It has a free-form structure where hackers gather, collaborate closely, unleash creativity, and continuously code to realize their ideas. The essence of a hackathon is a group of like-minded individuals coming together within a specific timeframe to do what they want to do, with almost no restrictions on the coding process.

As a competition that has been held for five years, PingCAP co-founder and CTO Huang Dongxu always worries about whether the current event can match the success of the previous one. However, after seeing the contestants’ impressive presentations, it became clear that as developers’ understanding and use of TiDB become more sophisticated, the quality of the hackathon continues to evolve. Ultimately, during the two-day and one-night hacking time, 16 teams shared a total prize pool of 350,000 yuan, with 10 teams winning awards for Best Creativity, Public Welfare Contribution, Technology Trend, Cloud Application Ecosystem, Most Popular, Best Campus, and User’s Choice.

Abundant Results, Infinite Project Creativity

The judges found many projects from this year’s teams to be “very ambitious” and already mature enough for implementation. For example, the “Tu Yi Le” team provided an online service called “Data Dance” that allows users to explore, analyze, and understand data; the “12 Cats” team enabled everyone to contribute components to TiDB through TiUP personal mirrors, creating a component market prototype; the “I Support You” team introduced a new index to achieve TiDB’s collaborative optimization capability with the “TiFlash Collocated Optimization”; the “cdc-plg” team provided a “cdc sink plugin” project for TiCDC users to extend plugins; the “Canopus” team worked on the “TiDB Computing Microservices” project, and many more. You can learn about all the projects through the following link.

The final presentations and Demo Show, distributed across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Singapore, lasted from 13:00 in the afternoon until 20:30 at night. Despite the nearly 8-hour duration, the excitement grew as the event progressed. Usually reserved and introverted tech experts transformed into eloquent speakers when introducing their products. Here are some on-site photos to give you a feel of the atmosphere:

After intense evaluation, the judges awarded first, second, and third prizes, as well as Best Creativity, Public Welfare Contribution, Technology Trend, Cloud Application Ecosystem, Most Popular, Best Campus, and User’s Choice awards for both the TiDB Product Group and the Application Group. Due to fierce competition, many excellent projects unfortunately did not win. Here is the complete list of winners:

Multi-city Connection, Code Power and Passion Burst

Early on the 22nd, teams from various locations began arriving at PingCAP’s event venues, signing in, taking photos, and receiving commemorative gifts.

Contestants either raced against time to prepare their projects, engaged in heated group discussions, or tirelessly coded to deliver projects that would satisfy both themselves and the judges within the stipulated time.

Distributed Event Support, Food and Drinks are Essential

A hardcore hackathon is incomplete without food and drinks. To ensure the smooth running of the distributed event across six cities, volunteers prepared various afternoon teas, lunches, and dinners for the participants, providing distributed logistical support throughout the event.

“Martial” Skills PK, Coding & Entertainment Combined

A “Marathon” for the Judges Too

The final presentations began at 13:00 on October 23rd, with 18 judges from five cities listening attentively to the contestants’ creative ideas and project defenses. The projects were so impressive that the judging process was like a “marathon” for the judges. After the presentations, the judges asked questions from various professional perspectives, offering suggestions for project improvement and expressing high expectations. Contestants felt they gained a lot from the feedback.
